When we tell stories of historical women, they are often paired with misogyny, and the overcoming of sexism. On my yearly trip to Japan (2022) I was able to witness the works of Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, said to be one of the last Ukioy-e (Japanese woodblock printing) artists of his time. This is a reinterpretation of his piece “Hangaku Jyo” (1883-1886) a female samurai. Upon research I was able to find multiple examples of female warriors.
How many stories has history erased because we didn’t/couldn’t teach the next generation? Artists serve a greater purpose by visual story telling. Without these stories, she may just be forgotten.
What I wanted to accomplish with this painting was to send a love letter to all women. We are constantly told by society how we should be, what we can’t do, and with little representation (especially within minority communities). When in fact, we have always had great power, leadership, and strength to accomplish anything. I hope this piece becomes a constant reminder of that.
